Product Description

L293D Motor Driver IC

Dual HBridge IC for LowPower DC and Stepper Motor Control

The L293D is a popular 16pin integrated circuit that simplifies controlling DC motors and stepper motors, allowing bidirectional drive. It contains two Hbridges capable of driving two DC motors or one stepper motor at currents up to 600mA per channel [citation:1][citation:5].

Controls Two Motors - Drives two DC motors or one bipolar stepper motor
Builtin Protection Internal clamp diodes protect against back EMF
Supply voltage for motors: 4.5V to 36V (pin 8) [citation:1]
Logic supply voltage: 4.5V to 7V (pin 16) [citation:11]
Connect enable pins (1 and 9) to VSS or use PWM for speed control [citation:4]

√ Built-in flyback diodes for simpler wiring

√ Works with 3.3V and 5V logic levels

√ Used extensively in Arduino robotics projects [citation:4]

Troubleshooting

IC gets extremely hot:

  • Check current draw, do not exceed 600mA continuous per channel [citation:1][citation:7]
  • Add a heatsink for prolonged operation
  • Ensure motor supply voltage (pin 8) doesn't exceed 36V [citation:5]

Motor not responding:

  • Verify enable pins (1 and 9) are HIGH [citation:4]
  • Check logic supply (pin 16) is 4.5V to 7V
  • Ensure both GND pins are connected [citation:11]
